View Full Version : Project 6.BLOW

tired of having a basically stock truck and decided to redo the top end of the 6.blow. already did egr delete, upgraded oil cooler, new thermostat, updated turbo oil drain, coolant filter and blue spring fuel pressure upgrade and tunes from matt R at gearhead performance. truck runs great and i love it but its time for more.

found a sick deal on a barely used powermax, then i decided to order a race fuel regulated return setup with fuel bowl delete and some 175cc/75% warren injectors. those will be going on when the cab comes off soon at the same time studs and new oem hg's and a 4" turbo back exhaust go on. also in prep i bought a spare motor and took the heads off and sent them off to be machined and ready to install when the cab comes up. planning to also do a live tune from gearhead also after the install.

aaanny ways heres some pics and the list.

Looks awesome man. whats the stock turbo on he 6.0?

Agjake11
03-11-2012, 02:48 PM
stock is a garrett vgt turbo

http://i615.photobucket.com/albums/tt237/thejake1989/super%20dooty/Oil%20cooler/DSCN4043.jpg

powermax is a little bigger similar to the gt38r upgrade for the 7.3 (38r is also a powermax). the 6.0 powermax is still vgt but has larger inducer

so the stock 6.0 turbo cant be swapped with the stock 7.3? Ive searched the diesel forum im on but cant find any info on it.

Agjake11
03-11-2012, 02:52 PM
theres been one ive seen where someone put a stock 6.0 vgt on an obs 7.3 but there no real reason to swap the vgt on to the 7.3 except the whistle. the 6.0 powermax is a direct drop in just like the 38r for the 7.3 no need to change up pipes etc

Bdons-SD
03-11-2012, 03:01 PM
No added boost? I hear the stock 7.3 can only handle up to 30 psi and up to 25 efficiently, im running 24. The whistle would be nice... ha ha.

You know anything about swapping the impeller with the banks impeller? You seem to know a lot about te turbos, your kind of my go to guy ha ha

Agjake11
03-11-2012, 03:06 PM
haha. i have a buddy with a early 99 7.3 hes currently finishing up studs injectors, hpop, and an s366 turbo. im not sure on the boost numbers but the best bang for the buck with basically every thing else stock is the 38r. your biggest enemy isnt lifting the heads but more the PMR's you have.

and heres the aeromotive regulator

Haven't broke down a 6.0 or 7.3 yet but it's something I wouldn't
be afraid to take on.

03-12-2012, 10:20 AM
it really wasnt all that involved but was 100% easier without the cab anywhere nearby haha. it would have taken me longer if i cared where all the bolts went and had to bag them up. doing it this way i just zipped the out and threw them in a cup or plastic tub

That sounds like you'll be busy for a while. How much $ have you got into the rebuild?

total cost for the build will be around 5500 all said and done. but theres alot of parts being sold and deals made that are eating at that total. my best guess puts me at around 2K out of pocket when its done

01 D_Max
03-12-2012, 10:22 PM
That's a cheap build! Nice job. I am sure others know the history, but was this a blown up engine before the build?

Agjake11
03-12-2012, 10:33 PM
my truck is doing just fine right not but i wanted more power. its got almost 178K on it now. the parts motor i bought had blown oil and egr cooler and blew the head gaskets. i only wanted the heads but the guy said take the long block for 400 bucks. the injectors themselves are going to bring me 500-800

Very simillar to what I am planning here shortly. I am going with Powermax, Studs, hopefully a GoGo Stage 1 ported Intake but that will be last considering the $$$. Also doing a Regulated Return from Dozers, and a DF165 Airdog. Only Difference is the injectors, I am only going 155/50's I think for now, cause I still need to be able to tow max tow rating ++++. Like a couple time a month I am at GCVW of 32-34,000lbs moving a friends skytrax on a 35' dual tandem, Its typically never more than 15 to 20 miles and never over 50mph.

My daily trailer is about 8500lbs, and twice a week I tow around 15,000lbs. I average 30,000 miles a year towing those two trailers, so i figure I should just stick with 155/30's or maybe 50%'s?

All that sounds expensive and time consuming....just drop in a 5.9 cummins and forget about it:favorites37:

Yeah, because dropping in a 5.9 cummins isn't expensive and time consuming at all!

And then you still might crack a block, stretch a head bolt or blow a gasket when you put power to it....just ask my buddies with thier 5.9's! ....just sayin....people always wanna say the 5.9 is the cure all when in reality, it's just another mechanical engine.

The 6.0 is one of the most misunderstood engines out there. It got a really bad rap in the begining that it just couldn't overcome, when honestly, if you wanted to make it an extremely reliable engine it isn't all that expensive nor all that difficult.

EGR Delete $200
ARP's $450
Gaskets $250
Coolant Flush to ELC and Coolant Filter - $300ish

That alone would give you a very reliable engine for many many miles. Add about $1,800 for labor if you don't wanna mess with it yourself and you have a great motor for a little over $3grand. Then you have the left over $7 grand you saved from not doing a cummins conversion to add power in whatever from you want.

I've been hearing that the 6.0 is a little more reliable than the consumer reports say. Just don't over boost without bulletproofing. And delete that EGR.

You are correct sir, the 6.0 is a GREAT motor if its done right and took care of, yes they have problems but you fix those problems and you can build the crap out of that motor and get major HP!!! The few things i done to mine helped out alot and it runs great now!!

06VT365

I've been hearing that the 6.0 is a little more reliable than the consumer reports say. Just don't over boost without bulletproofing. And delete that EGR.

One of the main problems the 6.0 had was it replaced the near bulletproof 7.3!
The 6.0 can not be treated like a 7.3, it needs regular maintnance. Fuel filters every 15K max, good oil and regular oil changes. It also doesn't like lots of short trips, it needs to be DRIVEN. Short trips that don't let it get up to temp then being shut off again is a death sentence. It also doesn't like to sit, moisture in the air then rusts the VGT, and you can have all kinds of turbo problems.

Some of the most reliable 6.0's are ones that are worked everyday in and out. Most of the real low mileage units are problems childs..not always, but it is definitly a pattern.

Part of the problem was people went from a 7.3 to the 6.0 in 03 and 04, and treated like they did their 7.3, they then paid the price for it.

I have 134K on my 06, I work it to the bone every day, I maintain it very well, but I am not easy on the truck at all! I have had 1 EGR cooler fail (warranty), IPR Valve (warranty) and recently a wiring harness problem (not under warranty) It is starting to have an injector issue, but other than that its been a great truck and I couldn't be happier with it.

Now that warranty is expired, I have an EGR delete, ARP's, new Gaskets, and new oil cooler waiting in the garage. In the next couple weeks I will start tearing it down to really bulletproof it. Just waiting to get money to get my Warren Injectors here then start!!

The thing is, you just need to be informed about the engine. Know what might happen, prepare for it and fix it if it does happen.

And no engine sounds better then a straight piped 6.0!!!! IMO that is.

Cool your jets top gun :jester: The 5.9 diesel is one of the best ever made. Just like the 7.3 is. I am a Ford / International man. But you must admit they dropped the ball after the 7.3 and thus fords decision to go in house to build there own diesel. 6.0 in stock form is possibly the worst diesel made along wit the 6.9 old school Chevy diesel.

With that said I would deffinatly have a 6.0 if it was headed, studded, and deleted. At the time I was looking to get back into a diesel from my 1/2 Ton F150 super crew 4x4 I almost traded for a sweet 06 F250 crew cab lifted. I wanted it but we just couldn't get together on it. It had all the right engine work. Paper work to prove it.

Then I got the offer on my current truck. Met with him and drove it and fell in love. It's hard to explain untill you own a modded 5.9 CTD. It has a lighter feel (it is lighter and has 40% less moving parts) and is freaking fast. It sounds amazing with the 5" MBRP exhaust. It will now be hard for me to go back. I'm not saying I won't but it would have to be something amazing for me to switch. I do love a F250 tho. They are my first love :favorites37:

the dodges do drive much lighter I know, my buddies have several. From 1st gen on up to a 2011 6.7 cummins. I have driven them all, and for some reason still prefer my truck.
And your right the 5.9 is one of the best, but they do have problems too. Nothing like the 6.0 but they do breakdown still, and at a cost of 8-10 grand to convert, i would just bulletproof the 6.0 and save some coin myself......but I am a happy 6.0 owner so that makes a big difference!
To me, if somebody wants a cummins, they should do what you did and just by a dodge, I think its far less likley to have problems that way.

maintenance is KEY. theres a good thread on the org about how many 6.0s are still running around on TTY bolts and running tunes.

One of the main problems the 6.0 had was it replaced the near bulletproof 7.3!

And no engine sounds better then a straight piped 6.0!!!! IMO that is.

The main issues were there was no service manual when the first 03/04 truck rolled in with egr etc related issues. BUT the 6.0 is ALOT easier to make power with. over 400hp with a tune and egr delete

What brand gauge you running for fuel psi?
I have glowshift....they are so so. seems like my fuel psi reads good for about 6 months, then starts to read high and slowly creeps higher, sender keeps going bad, been through 3 sending units now and it starting again!
But you get what you pay for! I bought them cause they were cheap, and now I am paying for it!

Saving up now for the edge eas so I can read it with my cts.

I love pillar gauges too, I currently have a quad pod with egt, water temp, oil temp, and fuel psi. But I could never get the water and oil temp gauges to read correctly. I have tried several different locations but just cant get it right. I was really want to check the deltas between water and oil temp to see if my oil cooler was ok or not so I finaly splurged for the insight cts.

The glowshift gauge will be good for ya, if it starts reading funky just give em a call. They have great customer service. And even if you need a new sending unit its only like $15.

I love the look of their gauges, just wish the sensors were better quality....but great customer service helps!

wanted at least fuel press and boost so i said ill get a triple at least and add HPOP

snapped a pic of the gauge mocked up in the pod. the dash holds the pod on there pretty tight and had to make sure the gauge would clear the steering wheel.

Pressure never got. Below 60 psi. And I also loaded my geadhead srl+ tune that's got more boost than the srl I was running. Playing the game of how long till I can lift the heads hahaa

psi looks good. When I first put mine on last year it was 50 at idle and would drop below 40 at WOT!! So I did the blue spring upgrade and it has bee. Right at 72 at idle, and will drop to 55ish at wot running my looney tune. Seems to be a bit low still at WOT to me.

Yea this is with the blue spring installed. Haven't gone really WOT yet as its not exactly safe with this tune haha. Didn't want to lift the Rafa just yet haha. But tells me that the stock pump is good for now and I can hold off on the a1000

So do you need the A1000 to fget it running or just the regulator? Or is it just a while were doing it might as well add the A1000....that's usually how I end up spending my money!

Bet you really can't wait now!!!!

Agjake11
05-31-2012, 11:47 PM
Were pretty sure that removing the secondary fuel filter killed me using the stock pump.

The new lines etc a1000 and regulator are at PSE and it should be up and running tomorrow for sure. I'll go get it sat am before the show that's right by the shop unless I get antsy and go get it tomorrow. Very ready to drive the crap out of it.

O and don't be like that guy blowing through a gallon of coolant every other week and think studs will fix it. Haha

06VT365
06-01-2012, 08:38 AM
My money says you get antsy! I couldnt wait I know!

Hope it runs awesome for ya, and cant wait to hear how it runs!

Ya.....when hw said he was going through a gallon every 2 weeks I about crapped! I have maybe puked a tablespoon of coolant, just had a tiny trail running down the resivoir, and that was right after I had it in for service and they topped everthing off. I was wondering if they overfilled it maybe???? Although I know it builds pressure slowly so I know it has a minor issue. Up till then I thought it was ok since it had never puked, so I was thinking about the 1 at a time approch.

That was 4 months and 10 thousand miles ago, never puked again, coolant level stays good and temps are normal according to insight cts. So I am torn, cause when though its not puking, I know it builds up to 16 psi in the coolant system while towing after about an hour or so.

Thats why I asked him if he had checked psi before this....it would be interesting to know if there was any difference. Do I think its going to fix his problem, no. But I was thinking if it helps his problem at all, I would feel better about that approach to mine, since honestly if I hadn't checked the pressure I wouldn't have a clue that anything is wrong since it doesn't go through coolant and doesn't puke anymore.

But....i also already have the gasket set sitting in the garage, and I hate doing things halfa$$ed I will end up tearing it all down I know.

Anywho...i hope you get a nice weekend in your truck!!!

Feedback jack. LOL. How's it running?

Agjake11
06-20-2012, 12:10 AM
First off blue looks awesome and that turbo is smexy. What traction bars do you have?

Now the truck is running awesome. Had two minor hiccups since getting it Friday but the sticking Vgt bands haven't been a problem again and had a fuel leak at the return line where we bypassed the former stock pump. Think I got that all fixed up tonight.

Now just have a tuning issue I called Matt about with a dead spot at about 50mph. Confident he can tune it out.

Also did kustom underhood emblem and an s&b intake also. Might dyno it this sat if I feel up to it but smoke is completely manageable for street. Light throttle is clean and maybe slight haze. If you lay into it it will bellow though. Need more air now. Already planning. We turbo and traction bars. Thank you keystone pipeline haha
