So the wife and I decided we ARE getting a third car for saving gas given my SD is getting between 15 and 20 mpgs (depending on the tune im using) and her escape is getting about 16, and id like to keep the miles down on my truck.

We were looking at 2wd rangers and mazda b series pickups, but I think we are going to go the route of 4 door car. We are mainly looking at mid to late 90s BMWs and SAABs, I like the bimmers, she likes the looks of the saabs.

I just thought a thread to follow and get some opinions on some cars would be pretty cool, I know west is a bimmer guy.

heres what we are fixin to look at in the next couple of days.

I wish we could pick up something newer ha ha, sounds like a fun car. We are restricted by our tax return and what we can throw at it within our budget so the "under 5" is where it's at! There are some pretty decent cars for that price though.

Phew ha ha... They are spendy. I like the focus, I'm just not big on cars really. The only ones I really seem to like are the European imports.

I can just see you hopping out of an escort :jester: Im 6'3" 200 lbs and I have a hard time fitting in our escape, I dont know how im going to handle a car. I guess if its fun to drive and gets good mileage itll outweigh the discomfort.

Going to go look at this tomorrow:

Gunna be careful about the rebuilt title, find out why. If I really like it I'll pay to get a vin lookup and a carfax.

Why not think about a VW tdi? They are great little cars, excellent fuel mileage and then you can stick with diesel! If you are set on either a bmw or saab I would go bmw, the saabs are great cars and last a long time but are very hard to find parts for these days.

You can't go wrong with them rangers. They are great little trucks.

Bdons-SD
03-14-2012, 07:00 PM
I can't find any tdi's in my budget otherwise I would go that route. As for the rangers, I like em a lot, but if my wife is going to drive it with the little one she'd prefer a car.

I bought my daughter a 98 528i BMW just a month ago or so. It's a sweet ride.

Thats an awesome first car... I have kind of wandered from the BMW's they just stopped popping up on CL. My wife told me to start looking at VWs again, came across this Jetta gli vr6 with the 6sd manual. Went out and drove it today, and man, thats a hell of a ride. I love the bimmers, but my wife likes the Jettas, and I dig em too so I think we might try to snatch this one up tomorrow. Sucks I cant find a bimmer, but I think this will fit as a commuter/3rd family car a little better than a bimmer coupe ha ha.

Its a little dirty but itll clean up nice. Just got out of the tranny shop on friday (he showed receipts) drove really nice, no ticks, squeaks, or thumps. couple small blemishes on the body but nothing noticable unless you know its there. should buff up nice.

Insurance on a BMW isnt cheap. I was going to buy one, and it wasnt worth the insurance at all for me.

Saab is basically a european gm. I assume they still help build them since the bail out. Just get a focus or escort. Great lil cars, great mpg and look good. Well atleast the focus looks good. I almost bought an svt zx3. My ex and i bought a 96 escort se 4 door sedan and that thing got 38mpg easy and low 40's on the highway. 5speed is the only way to go in a lil car. Escort zx2's are great lil cars as well. Only 2 doors though. You could get a zx5 focus (4 door hatch back for a lil over 3k).

We ended up picking up the Jetta, its sittin in the garage right now, Im going to vacuum it out and do a rough cleaning. She liked it, I like it, its sporty while still getting about 25-30 mps. itll help keep the miles down on my rig and her escape while still maintaining a nice sporty car. I just got back from the hour long drive to pick it up and I am satisfied. Im actually kind of excited to go to the dentist tomorrow just because I get to drive it. :jester: Ill get some pics when I clean her up tomorrow.

That's right! Ha ha I did find one that had a bad tranny, but he was still asking 6k for it with 150k. I know that's not a lot for a diesel but 6k plus another grand for a transmission rebuild was a little high for what we were looking for

We were looking at those too, I like em. We were looking at BMW 325i's, VW jettas and golfs 1.8t and vr6's, Volvos with a turbo wagon or sedan, and saabs with the 2.0 turbo. All in a stick shift.

We are really liken the jetta gli though, vr6 with a 6spd. It's a nice mixture of economical, luxarious, and sporty. Been driving it for a little over a week straight and I'm saving half of my old gas bill, between 200 and 250 extra bucks a month.
